Simply put, a business case provides good reasons for an action, usually, an investment. So, an IT business case gives good reasons for investing in an IT project, product, or service. A business case has words and numbers pulled together into reasons and arguments. An ROI model is just the numbers part.
Specifically, a business case does three things:
- Quantifies and values a business opportunity;
- Justifies the investment of resources based on a financial model calculating expected benefits, costs,a the overall return on investment;
- Serves as a plan to deliver the opportunity. And helps sequence work based on its value, which can be input into the task-based project plans.
